History of Barriere Construction

Barriere Construction has a rich history of building homes and other building structures and that building bug has been a part of the family since 1906. What started off as lunch wagons, turned diners, eventually evolved into home construction of the highest quality and caliber. Maintaining that tradition, Adam Barry brought his experience as a project manager for his father’s luxury home building company and began designing and building high-end homes for the people of the Chicago area.

Adam Barry and Barriere Construction have adapted their methods into the “green era.” When building new homes, they focus on creating these homes that are eco-friendly and energy efficient, while keeping their creative and stylish touch on every project they undertake. They utilize solar panels and even build homes with electric charging stations for cars.

New Home Technology Trends To Follow

New Home Technology Trends To Follow

New Home TechnologyAs visitors to the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas saw, developers and manufacturers have been working overtime to create an impressive array of new home technology to make daily life more comfortable and efficient. Exhibitors demonstrated everything from smart mirrors that analyze the user’s face and skin and provide advice, to an automatic laundry-folding machine and a dishwasher that is controlled with a smartphone app and can order its own detergent when supplies run low. There have been significant advanced in the development of smart home technology components in the past couple of years, offering homeowners energy-saving opportunities and better security and convenience, as well.

  • Connected HVAC Systems – All though smart thermostats are not brand new; the overall technology driving smart climate control systems is evolving rapidly. An integrated smart climate control system can automatically manage the air conditioning, forced air heat, radiant floor heating, and even geothermal or dual fuel systems for best energy efficiency, and give you an analysis of the system’s usage and efficiency through an app. Adjust settings manually, if you wish to create your perfect indoor climate, or allow the system to adjust as needed for maximum savings on heating and cooling costs.
  • Intelligent Home Security – As the number of manufacturers producing smart home system components grows, homeowners are getting larger sets of choices that are compatible with the various smart home system hubs available on the market. One of the fastest growing segments in these components are security-related. Door locks, lights, smoke and carbon dioxide alarms, doorbell cameras and perimeter cameras, along with actual security sensors for doors windows, and gates are now available from multiple manufacturers, with more options available every month. Some homeowners’ insurance companies offer discounts for homes that are equipped with intelligent home security systems, so the cost of installing them may be offset to a significant degree.
  • Whole-Home Smart Systems – Whole-home smart systems like Wink, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit are becoming increasingly useful as developers collaborate to create an increasing number of compatible devices to add to those systems. Voice control systems like Amazon Alexa work with a growing number of systems to allow you to speak directions to turn lights and fans on and off, adjust the thermostat, set the alarm system and lock or unlock doors, control the sprinkler system or garage door, run a robot vacuum cleaner, or listen to music anywhere in the house. With or without voice control, whole-home smart systems make daily life more convenient. Imagine being able to see who’s on your doorstep while you’re at work, unlock the gate for workmen when you’re not home, and set the vacuum to have the floors clean by the time you get home!

FAQs About Working With A Custom Home Builder

FAQs About Working With A Custom Home Builder

Naperville custom home builders.Deciding to build a custom home is a choice that will affect your family’s lifestyle for years to come, hopefully for the better. It’s an opportunity to live in the home of your dreams, but between you and that dream home is a process of choosing the right custom home builders, working with them on design, then actually building that home. You’re going to have a lot of questions when you’re planning your new home in Naperville. The custom home builders at Barriere Construction have decades of experience in helping families like yours sort out their options and make design choices that will serve their needs today, and well into the future.

What’s The Cost Per Square Foot?

Often, this is the first question asked when discussing a custom home build, and it’s kind of a trick question, because the cost per square foot depends upon your lot and design decisions, among other factors. A reputable custom home builder won’t give you an off-the-cuff answer to this question, because until you’ve discussed the project in detail, there are too many variables to even make an informed guess.

Another important consideration for you, the buyer, is what return you will see on each investment you choose. Some choices, you will make to suit your family and lifestyle, like maybe that rain and steam shower you’ve always wished for. In other cases you’ll make choices because they will cut future costs like water or heating and cooling costs. In some cases, you may benefit from rebates or tax credits for choosing certain materials or appliances. In other cases, you may get a discount on your homeowners’ insurance for building in security measures that reduce your home’s risk.

Everyone’s Talking About Green Homes. Is That Just Marketing Buzz?

Green home building is a real field with real benefits to home buyers. It encompasses everything from selecting the right site for the home on the lot, to making best use of the tress and any landscaping that are already in place; reducing construction waste, recycling, and using recycled materials when appropriate; and energy-efficient design of the home. Materials like low-E insulated windows; wall, attic, and basement insulation; Tyvek wrap and elastomer sealants on exterior walls; energy efficient HVAC, water heater, and appliances; water-saving showers, toilets, and landscape irrigation; and a lighting system optimized to make best use of natural light all contribute toward a home that maintains a healthy and comfortable environment while reducing environmental impact and the costs associated with running the home.

Benefits Of New Home Construction vs Buying An Existing Home

Benefits Of New Home Construction Over Purchasing An Existing Home

Choosing whether to buy an existing home or dive into new home construction can be a difficult decision for many homeowners. Existing homes are already standing, already have utilities, and are usually in existing neighborhoods. It seems like an existing home purchase should provide a more convenient and shorter way to get your family moved into a new home, but you’re going to be living with your next home for a long time, and speed and convenience aren’t necessarily the most important considerations for such a long-term decision

  • New Home Construction in Downers Grove, IL.Don’t Buy Someone Else’s Problems – When you purchase an existing home, you have little to no idea how that home has been used or maintained over the course of its life. You get the current owner’s word about how they have maintained the home, but what about previous owners? Of course, you’ll have inspections done, but inspectors can only discover what they can see. There are some significant and potentially costly things that can be wrong with a home that routine inspections might not detect, and you will only learn about them after you’re committed and living in the home: mold, lead, hidden asbestos, and plumbing or electrical problems inside the walls, for example.
  • Get Exactly What You Want – When you work with an experienced custom home builder, you’ll get the design advice you need to build a home with all the functionality you and your family need, right from the start. Remodeling is often a process of compromise because many of the changes a homeowner would like to make involve re-working the home’s structure, so they are cost-prohibitive. New home construction gives you the opportunity to create the spaces you need and want without that type of compromise. Create the natural lightscape you want, build in the storage you need, plan for future needs, and start with a completely blank slate for style.
  • Take Advantage Of The Latest Technology – Existing homes vary widely in the quality of materials used to build them. Energy efficient building materials are evolving rapidly, and there are much better offerings today than there were as little as ten years ago. Even if an existing home was built with the most efficient materials and systems of its day, it won’t be as efficient as a new home built with today’s green and energy efficient technology. When you work with a knowledgeable builder to design a home from the ground up, everything from window placement to wall insulation and landscape plantings to the HVAC system work together to give you decades of dependable comfort, energy savings, and reduced environmental impact.

Downers Grove Builders

Hallmarks Of Top Quality Home Builders

Hallmarks Of Top Quality Downers Grove Builders

Many people, when it comes time to build or remodel their home, choose a builder based solely on cost per square foot. Obviously, cost will be a factor in your decision, but your peace of mind and the quality of the workmanship and materials should also be important considerations because you’re going to be living with the results of this major decision for years, decades, or generations. There are some specific things you should look for in choosing between Downers Grove builders, because they indicate that you’re talking to a reputable and experienced contractor who will give you the end results you want, on time and on budget, and no nasty surprises during or after the process.

  • Downers Grove BuildersClear Communications – Whether you’re building a new home or remodeling an existing one, you undoubtedly have ideas of what you want, and don’t want, in your home. When you talk to a homebuilder about your project, do you have a sense that they’ve listened to your desires and needs and have a genuine understanding of the results you want? Are they presenting their proposals and ideas in a clear and complete way that you understand? You’re going to be partnered with your builder for the duration of your project and working closely together, so you need to be confident that you’re communicating and cooperating well, right from the start.
  • State-Of-The Art Techniques & Materials – One way that inferior builders cut costs is by taking shortcuts in design and construction, and using lower-quality materials. Most people expect their homes to stand for decades, so you want to build with the best materials you can afford and from a design that takes your family’s health and comfort into account, along with important things like energy-efficient features that will save you money in the future. A quality builder will present you with options that achieve your stated goals and offer additional benefits you may not have known were available to you.
  • Written Estimate – Once you’ve discussed design and materials for your build, a reputable home builder will provide you a written estimate that specifies the work to be done, the materials that will be used, any additional expenses (such as required inspections), and a timetable, which should include a firm completion date, as well as benchmark dates for intermediate goals. The estimate should also specify the process and charges for change orders, just in case.
  • Material Warranties & Construction Guarantee – Your builder should offer you quality materials backed by a manufacturer’s warranty, and a guarantee of their workmanship, as well. Before you commit to working with a builder, find out what warranties and guarantees you’ll be getting when you work with them.

Building A New Home

Building A New Home For Your Young Family

Building A New Home For Your Young Family

When you’re in the planning stages of a building a new home for your young family, it’s easy to get excited and wrapped up in thinking about all the things you want and need from that home today, but if you take the time to design a home that plans for the future, too, you and your family will get decades or maybe even generations of good service from that home.

  • Building A New HomeA Nursery With A Future – If your family includes a baby, or you hope it will soon, one smart choice you can make in your home design is a nursery adjacent to the master bedroom. Once your last infant is ready for his or her own bedroom, you can use the space for a private den or office, a craft or exercise room, or convert it to an extra walk-in closet.
  • Open Design, Open Sightlines – An open design in the main living area of the house offers open sightlines over a wide area, so you can give young children more room to roam, while still keeping an watchful eye on their activities. Open floor plans are also desirable for entertaining, so it’s a good choice for families of all types and ages.
  • Plan For Tomorrow – Today, you may be building a home for your family with a baby or toddler and pre-school aged kids, but someday, that family will include teenagers, and at some point, you may have a multi-generational family including elder parents or young adults moving back home after college. Plan a bathroom that would readily lend itself to access for a wheelchair or someone with difficulty walking. Plan a space where your future teens can entertain friends without driving you crazy. Think about spaces in your home where your family can stay active and entertained when it’s too cold and snowy to be outside. Maybe today’s basement can be finished as a playroom with a soccer goal net at one end, ball pit, or built-in swings. As the kids get older, you can convert the space to a private family theater or game room, and when they’ve moved out, it can be the bar you always wanted.

Green Home Building

Know What Goes Into Green Home Building

Do You Know What Goes Into Green Home Building?

Green homes are a hot topic these days, and most people know that they help protect the environment, in addition to offering a healthier environment for families and healthy savings on energy costs. It’s important to understand what goes into green home building, though, because there’s a lot more to the process than meets the eye. If you’re planning to build a custom green home, you want to be sure you’re partnering with a home-builder who can deliver a finished project that is Energy-Star certified, using the latest techniques and materials, so your green home will give you every available comfort and protection while doing its part to conserve water, gas, and electricity, and reduce environmental pollution.

  • Site Planning & Preparation – Green home building actually begins with the sit selection for your home, and the preparation of that site. By situating the house in between mature, healthy trees, you get the benefit of their shade and air-cleaning properties, in addition to preventing wasteful clearing of usable plants. Careful site planning saves you money on landscaping and can reduce water and energy consumption from day one.
  • Energy-Efficient Architecture – The structure of your home can also make a significant contribution to energy efficiency. A green home design will likely include window placement for maximum natural light, reducing the need for electrical lighting during the day; interior design features that promote effective natural airflow through the home; efficient airflow through the attic; and roof surfaces planned for effective solar panel operation. There are many additional architectural features that can help a green home achieve best energy efficiency, depending on the overall style of the home you want.
  • Materials That Save Energy – Insulation is a key factor in creating an energy-efficient home: Styrofoam insulation next to exterior walls and in the basement, blown cellulose insulation in the attic or walls, Tyvek wrap and elastomer sealing inside exterior walls to help prevent conditioned interior air from leaking and wasting energy all contribute to the structural part of a green home’s performance. In addition, energy-efficient mechanicals, fixtures, and appliances further the home’s eco-friendly operation: High-performance, right-sized water heater, gas furnace, and air conditioning units top the list; a carefully designed HVAC system with sealed and insulated ducts, zoned thermostats gives you a comfortable indoor temperature with minimal power use; and low-emission, multi-pane windows provide protection against heat gain or loss due to outside temperatures, while providing an added layer of sound insulation.
  • Green Home BuildingSolar Power – Solar panels provide significant reductions in the amount of “dirty energy” your home demands. Whether you choose a system that stores power in a battery bank on your property, or sells excess power to the grid, you’ll see an impressive saving on your energy bills, right away. Designing the most efficient solar system possible begins with an analysis of the power your home will demand, and designing your roof to provide adequate space for the panels your home will need.
  • Water-Conserving Measures – With modern low-flush toilets and low-flow faucets and showerheads, you get eco-friendly operation, without sacrificing the performance you need to live comfortably. Choosing Energy-Star appliances like dishwasher and washing machine improves your water conservation further, and may also qualify for local, state, or federal tax incentive or rebate programs. Add an efficient irrigation system and well-designed landscape, and you’ve got a home that works hard to save water.
